According to a news article in Wired, they say that astrophysicist Replaces Supercomputer with Eight PlayStation 3s. This really puts the PS3 into good use. It is cheaper then a Supercomputer but it is as powerful as an supercomputer.
They are using it for solving a celestial mystery involving gravitational waves and what happens when a super-massive black hole, about a million times the mass of our own sun, swallows up a star.
